This song basically wrote itself after I got the initial riff. It’s about how difficult it is to be in a relationship with someone whose idea of love is to pull up too close and push away – sometimes simultaneously! And no, it’s not autobiographical.

As to lyrics, I was looking for a title, hell, a subject. I noticed a book on my shelf with the title “Scope of Fiction”, which collects short stories. It was from a course I took at the University of North Texas, and includes classics such as Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery and the awesome Girls in the Summer Dresses by Irwin Shaw. This song, alas, has nothing to do with these, I just stole the title of the book and took it from there.
